Thursday night brought me three and a half hours of sleep followed by three and a half hours of insomnia, so… If past performance is any guide, this old boy will do a little daytime dozing today.
My Sandman treated me well last night, perhaps to atone for the shoddy way he treated me the night before. Last night’s 10-hour sleep was segmented (the first segment from 21:00 to 23:00, and the second from 00:00 to 08:00) brought three very detailed dreams: one in the first segment and two in the second.
The first dream had me evicting a teen-aged boy from my apartment. He’d been trash-talking me for some time, insulting not only me but so many things that I respected and enjoyed. His mother allowed this kind of behavior from him at home, and he assumed he’d be able to continue it when visiting at my place. When I told him very clearly to stop, he looked me in the eyes and told me to go to Hell. So I escorted him to the door, ushered him out, and told him not to return.
The second dream had me trying to mediate between family factions that did not get along with each other on the day of a wedding between a young man and woman from each faction. The wedding ceremony itself went off without a hitch, but there had developed two separate wedding receptions, and it appeared that whoever attended one reception would incur the scorn of those at the other. Not a healthy situation, that.
The third dream had me tending to a very sick young girl. She was in a coma, in a hospital bed, and I was seated in a chair next to her. I’ve no idea who she was, and I wasn’t a medical person of any kind, but I was there doing what I could do.
Making up for the VERY short sleep of the night previous, last night’s segmented sleep was long and very dream filled. A total of ten hours came from 19:30 to 22:00, and from 00:00 to 07:30. And three very detailed dreams came, all in the night’s second sleep segment.
First dream: In this I was part of a volunteer crew helping a nightclub set up for a major show.
Second dream: Staying in a summer cottage with a group of friends, I had to fix a problem with the plumbing. Some fool had tried to flush a pair of basketball shoes down the toilet.
Third dream: I was taking a road trip and sharing driving duty with an attractive, black-haired woman.
Last night’s sleep was long (9.5 total hours), segmented (the 1st from 21:30 to 02:30, the 2nd from 03:30 to 08:00), and brought two very detailed lucid dreams, one in each sleep segment.
That dream in the first segment had me socializing with a young woman who seemed to be a composite of different women I’ve known over the years both on the Internet and in real life. She and her partner and I had a great time at her house. When I finally left after staying much longer with them than I should have I told them how much I enjoyed our time together. They agreed wholeheartedly, saying they’d been delighted with our visit, too. And when I expressed my desire to visit again they immediately said, “Oh, please, come back whenever you can!”
In the second dream I was visiting two guys with whom I used to work. I ran into them unexpectedly as I was preparing to leave the small Indiana town where I’d been visiting and return to San Antonio. They wanted me to join them for lunch, an idea I thought was just fine. We had a great chat and, upon leaving the establishment where we’d been eating, we found that a carnival had been set up in the parking lot. There were game booths, there was music playing, rides were set up, folks were milling all about in a very festive mood.

Last night’s 6-hour sleep, from 22:00 to 04:00, could certainly have been longer; but it did bring two vividly detailed and entertaining dreams. And it was followed (after some coffee, the first course of my breakfast, and a bit of work on the computer) by a relaxing hour of semi-dozing on the couch. So we can count that toward a total of 7 hours, which is enough sleep to get me through the day.
The first dream of the night was the longer of the two, and set me as part of a team of deep space explorers. We had all suffered from some kind of radiation sickness during a long flight and were convalescing at an off-world medical base. As the sickness worked its way through our metabolisms, we each began to physically transform in different ways. It was a bit scary to see the physical and psychological changes some of my teammates were undergoing.
The second dream was much shorter but just as detailed. It was set in my neighborhood and had me being hailed as I walked back to my hotel from a shopping trip by a former high school classmate of mine – a guy I’ve not seen in decades. He was waiting on the footpath behind the International Center for his wife and daughter to drive by and pick him up. He and I chatted for a short time before his ride appeared. There was really no place for his wife to park and traffic was heavy, so he quickly introduced me to his family as he climbed into the car, then off they drove.

The Sandman is being kind to me again, a fact for which I’m very grateful. After weeks of stress and trying to manipulate my biological clock, it’s good to relax and let things fall into their natural place again. Last night’s 8.5-hour sleep, from 20:00 to 04:30, was very restful and brought an enjoyable dream.
The dream had me interacting with someone I’ve never known, a friend of a friend, in a small town where I used to live. Walking along the sidewalk in the middle of the day, I noticed a woman I’d recently but barely met standing in line in front of a popular night club. She smiled when I said, “Hello.” And she really brightened up when I asked if she’d seen X recently, (“X” being the woman I’d recently begun dating and the woman through whom we’d met).
I paused when she grabbed my arm and asked, “Say, would you like an eggplant?” Taken somewhat aback by this question, I didn’t really know how to reply. She followed that with, “Listen, it’s not too early for us to have a beer together, is it? Come on.” And she stepped out of line and pulled me toward the entrance to the club’s bar.
